Sydney Student Accommodation
Finding student accommodation in Sydney is pretty easy. Sydney is in the state of New South Wales, the most populated state of Australia.
Students will love Sydney, it has many art schools and offers some of the countries best art courses. Sydney also offers really great lifestyle options for a student too! Student life in Sydney is basically made up of studying art, bar hopping and going to the beach.
Sydney Student Accommodation:
The majority of art schools in Sydney are located around the CBD, such as The Julian Ashton Art School - The Rocks / Circular Quay and The National Art School - Darlinghurst. Another major art school is the Sydney College of Arts, which is located out of the CBD in the surrounding inner city suburbs of Balmain.
If you are relocating to Sydney to study and you need Student accommodation we recommend staying in temporary accommodation 1 to 4 weeks before your course starts. This will allow you to evaluate access to transport to get to your studies or other lifestyle and employment opportunities without having to commit to a long term lease in a place that may not be right for you.
Inner city Sydney has lots of backpacker accommodation, that may be okay for the first week, but not for your entire stay, try looking for Weekly accommodation in Sydney as this tend to be more quite.
Choosing sydney student accommodation:
- Location - We recommend choosing accommodation in the outer suburbs of Sydney, its cheaper than staying in the City, rooms are often better and transport is good. But ask the location of bus stops and train stations and research timetables.
- Accommodation Type - Some lodge style accommodation only provide long term stays, this is often perfect student accommodation as the slow turnover of guests means a quiet environment. But beware, of travel lodges or backpacker lodges especially those in the central city area as your peace & quiet will certainly be disturbed.
- Internet - Ask if the lodge provides free internet. WIFI is best as you can connect on your own laptop in your own room. Some student accommodation however, may only provide a communal computer which is not easily accessible when you need it.
- Surrounding Area - Research the surrounding area, a main road can be noisy in the evenings, but parkland nearby like the balmain area may enable you to enjoy your stay more. The beach like Bondi wil also be nice, but more expensive. Also, are there affordable places to buy food?
- Accommodation Rules - Student accommodation often impose rules on students during their stay, they are often to protect all students. Be sure and check what rules exist and if you can live with them. Is there an evening curfew? can you have guests stay over? is alcohol permitted? can you quit the lease early?

Sydney is well serviced with quite a good transport system, Bus routes and train stations circle the CBD. From the City and it only takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes at most to reach the furthest outer sydney suburbs such as Hornsby. Which means finding sydney student accommodation outside of the CBD is a useful and often cheaper option. For transport information see: Transport Hotline, Sydney Buses or Sydney Trains.
