Sydney College of the Arts - History
In 1970, Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) was established as the first tertiary art school in New South Wales after a recommendation from the government. But it wasn't until 1976 that SCA was established as a College of Advanced Education, enrolled its first five art students, and took over the responsibility to design diploma courses. The following year, Sydney College of the Arts offered a visual arts program.
By 1988, SCA divided into the Design School and the Visual Arts School, which later became the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at the University of Technology, Sydney. Eventually, SCA became devoted to art research and art practice in the contemporary visual arts.
On January 1, 1990, Sydney College of Arts became an official academic college of the University of Sydney. And in 1996, after residing in 'temporary' premises in Balmain, the art school relocated to the historic Kirkbride buildings in Rozelle. Sydney College of Arts continues a rich tradition of academic excellence and multi-disciplinary visual arts education especially in contemporary arts practice.
