Student Accommodation:
There are several ways you can locate student accommodation in Australia. The simplest short term option is to stay at a lodge style hotel, this style of student accommodation is a cheap way to start out, though you are likely to share bathroom facilities. We recommend looking for a weekly accommodation lodge and plan to stay for betwen 1 and 4 weeks prior to your course commencemnt so you enough time to settle in, look around and change to a more permanet location if need be.
Staying in temporary accommodation will also allow you to evaluate access to transport to get to your studies or other lifestyle and employment opportunities without having to committ to a long term lease.
A good option for more permanent student accommodation, is to check with your college and ask about their student accommodation services, many colleges assist students in finding accommodation with other students, in shared student households. This can often enable you to quickly choose which home has the facilities and location you need and it's a great way to become friends with fellow students and share the burden and costs of student life.
If you intend to rent a house or unit, if you are a new arrival to Australia you may find it difficult, to increase your chances you should arrange personal references before you arrive, and have copies of your enrolment can sometimes help too.
If you are in need of student accommodation
whilst you study, consider the following:
- Location - Is the student accommodation nearby to your education? What is the availability of buses & trains? Ask the location of bus stops and train stations and research timetables.
- Accommodation Type - Some lodge style accommodation only provide long term stays, this is often perfect student accommodation as the slow turnover of guests means a quiet environment. But beware, of travel lodges or backpacker lodges as your peace & quiet will certainly be disturbed.
- Internet - Ask if the lodge provides free internet. WIFI is best as you can connect on your own laptop in your own room. Some student accommodation however, may only provide a communal computer which is not easily accessible when you need it.
- Surrounding Area - Research the surrounding area, a main road can be noisy in the evenings, but parkland nearby may enable you to enjoy your stay more. Where is the gym? And are their affordable places to buy food?
- Accommodation Rules - Student accommodation often impose rules on students during their stay, they are often to protect all students. Be sure and check what rules exist and if you can live with them. Is there an evening curfew? can you have guests stay over? is alcohol permitted? can you quit the lease early?
Deciding on the right student accommodation for you, may seem duanting, but don't worry, Australia has a fairly good standard of accommodation right across the board. Where ever you end up we are sure you will comfortable and enjoy your studies in Australia.
