Originally known as the School of Design, the art school opened in 1856. Later when the art school was housed in the old Exhibition Building located on North Terrace in Adelaide, it was known as the School of Arts and Crafts.
In 1892, The School of Art was the first in Australia to employ a woman to teach painting. The teacher, Elizabeth Armstrong, taught at the School of Art until 1928. Then under the leadership of Lawrence H. Howie and Harry Pelling Gill, more women were hired into the art faculty along with Armstrong. In fact, by the 1920's, the majority of the staff at the School of Art were women, including Jessamine Buxton, Ethel Barringer and Marie Tuck, which was unusual in comparison to the rest of Australia. During the 1930's and 1940's, women teachers including Mary P Harris, Dorrit Black and Jackie Hick were instrumental in introducing the concepts of modernism to the art students.
