RMIT School of Art is part of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, a university that has become one of the largest in Australia, and has gained an international reputation for excellence in technical and vocational education and research.
RMIT University can trace its roots back to the Working Men's College in Latrobe Street, Melbourne back in 1887. Since then, the university has been known by many other names before it became Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Art courses began to be taught at RMIT in 1887.
At the School of Art, students study the latest technologies and new media in the fields of multimedia, sound, video, photography, hybrid media, and animation, as well as more traditional arts such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, gold and silversmithing. The School also offers Koori art, and gives students the advantage of working with Koori artists.
Students come from all over Australia and the world to study at RMIT School of Art. The school draws a together a rich community of artists and scholars, practitioners and researchers, curators and writers. RMIT School of Art encourages creativity and innovation, and gives students a place to experiment with their artistic ideas.
Because RMIT School of Art acts as a Dual-Sector University with TAFE and Higher Education, the school can offer a large number of degree programs. The art study programs include Diploma Visual Arts (TAFE), BA Fine Art, MFA, MA Art Public Space, MA by Research, Doctor of Fine Art and Doctor of Philosophy.
