Bronze Sculpture | Art Dictionary

The sculptor makes a model with clay or other material. A latex mold is made from this. Plaster is set around the rubber mold, and molten wax is poured in and cooled. The wax solidifies around the edges first, and the still liquid center can be poured out This wax model is then used to make the mold that the molten bronze is poured into.

This 2-step ‘lost wax’ method is employed because there is a limit to how thick the bronze can be before suffering heat stress fractures during casting and cooling. The wax step enables hollow sculptures, and therefore, very large sculpture can be made. Besides large sculpture, if solid, might be too heavy to move easily.

Bronze sculptures are very durable, and can last thousands of years. Rodin was a famous bronze sculptor.
