Fortunately there are a few simple techniques that help overcome this difficulty. They stem from the truism that big things stem from small things.

The first solution is that when not knowing what to paint, simply start drawing whatever is in front of you. The act of drawing will tend to lead to new thoughts, follow these thoughts and draw them. This free association can have unexpected results, little to do with your bigger problem, but don’t worry, just draw and allow the mind to flow. Relaxing and enjoying are likely to occur, these can be powerfully curative if allowed to have full reign.

Another solution is to try to draw a picture of your childhood dreams. This seems silly at first, but again can re-jig the mind into activity.

In both these cases creative thoughts are likely to occur while doing something else creative, but not too grand things, simple things that allow the mind to fly.
