Set Designer

Set design, also known as scenic design or production design, is the creation of scenery for theatre, television, or film productions. A set designer is responsible for creating a visually appealing set that conveys the production's concept. Set designers need a background in performing arts production and set design, but may also have experience in architecture, interior design, and fine art.

The set designer needs to study the script carefully, and have a good understanding of the time period and location of the production. The director of the production usually has a specific vision or concept for the set design, and asks the set designer to work within these standards. However the set designer has a lot of artistic liberty when creating the scenery design, lighting, and overall look in regards to shape and colour. Sometimes the set designer also oversees the prop creation, costumes, and makeup.

Building theatre sets
The set designer creates the ideas for the set design, but others are responsible for producing it. Before the actual construction of the set, the set designer prepares scale models of the set, sometimes using computer design programs. Set designers working in television or film have to create a 'storyboard' to show how to set will appear in each scene. The set designer is also responsible for estimating costs and preparing a production schedule. When the set is ready to be constructed, the set designer oversees the work of lighting designers, propmasters, scenic painters, carpenters, and other members of the production team. The set designer works closely with the director throughout this whole process.

Set designers need to have a strong background in performing arts production and set design, but it's also helpful to have skills in architecture, interior design, and fine art. The best way to get the necessary experience to become a set designer is to first work as a designer's assistant or a production intern. Most universities offer specialised courses in performing arts production, theatre set design, and/or film and television set design. A great way to get a jump-start your career in set design is to help out in student theatre or film, local community theatre, and other low-budgets productions.
