Scenic Painter

Scenic paintinginvolves painting scenery for theatre, television, and film productions. Scenic painters need to have similar skills to studio painters and fine artists, however scenic painters work on a much larger scale. Scenic painting is closely related to set design.

Scenic painters primarily paint scenery, backdrops, and murals, although they also can paint props and other scenery pieces. A scenic painter needs to have a keen artistic eye and strong painting skills. It is essential for a scenic painter to have an understanding of different painting techniques such as landscape painting, portrait painting, and trompe l'oeil painting. It is also useful for a scenic painter to have experience with sculpture, rendering, gilding, and plastering.

Painting theatre sets and backgrounds
Scenic painters work within a team, with the set designer giving them a specific set of directions. The set designer may give the scenic painters model paintings or photographs that they are supposed to replicate exactly. Other times the set designer may only brief the scenic painters about what they are supposed to create, and the scenic painters paint using their own artistic vision. Within the scenic painting team, a 'charge scenic painter' oversees the overall work.

A scenic painter needs a strong background in fine art. Therefore it's helpful to take classes in sketching, painting, portraiture, sculpture, and so on. It's also important to have experience in performing arts production and set design. Get involved with student theatre or film productions, community theatre, or other low-budget productions. Ask if you can paint the backdrops and help out with other aspects of the set design. Not only are these experiences great for your resume, but also they offer invaluable experience.
