Mosaic art has existed since the beginning of civilisation. Mesopotamia was the first ancient society to create mosaic art using terracotta cones. Ancient Roman buildings were decorated with stone and glass mosaics that depicted scenes from everyday life. During the Byzantine era, the walls, ceilings and floors of churches were covered with elaborate mosaics of saints and angels some of these mosaics still exist today!
Where you'll find mosaics
In contemporary society, mosaics are still used for interior design, primarily in homes and businesses as an architectural design element. Mosaics are often commissioned for public places such as fountains, gardens and parks. Some mosaic artists make mosaic sculptures or small mosaic objects.
Mosaic tools & materials
Although it's more traditional for mosaics to be made from glass, tile, and stone, any kind of materials can be used, such as broken china, shells, beads, even wine corks.
How to become a Mosaic Artist
The best way to get a start in mosaic art is just to try it! Some mosaic artists teach workshops, and many community colleges and art schools offer mosaic courses & sculpture classes. If you're interested in getting commissioned work, you get there like any other type of fine artist - photograph your artwork then build an artists portfolio and market yourself!
