Industrial Designer

Industrial design, also known as product design, combines fine art, science, business, and marketing to design and develop everyday products often electronics or machinary. Industrial designers are responsible for the appearance, function, quality, and safety of various manufactured goods. They need to have good computer skills, an understandng of electronics and to be skilled in graphic design and technical drawing.

Most industrial designers focus on a particular type of product such as household goods, cars, consumer electronics, medical equipment, toys, or furniture. When developing a new product or modifying an existing product, the industrial designer needs to consider the product function, current customer tastes, and the client's requirements. They should conduct market research to learn about the product user and the context in which the product is used. They should meet with their clients to discuss specifications on size, shape, colour, weight, safety, materials, and cost. Industrial designers usually work within a team, so they also need to discuss their concepts with the company's creative director, the marketing team, and other members of the product design team.

The industrial designers then prepare the actual designs, either by hand or by computer-aided design (CAD). Sometimes they create a product prototype out of wood, polymer clay, or the actual materials of the product. The industrial designers show their designs to their client or manager, and incorporate any changes or suggestions they offer. Before the product design is finished, industrial designers need to run rigorous safety tests on their products.
