Game Designer

A game designer is a toy designer or industrial designer who focuses on designing video games, computer games, or traditional board games. Game designers usually have a background in graphic design, animation, computer programming or industrial design.

Most game designers specialise in video and computer games built for various game platforms such as hand-held gaming devices, internet games, online flash animated games, educational DVDs, mobile phone games and games for the computer. Not only are video and computer games an exploding, multi-million dollar business, but their design involves the most creativity and skill.

Testing some new computer games

A game designer will develop the general concept, function, appearance and layout of the game. They design the game environment and write the game plot. Sometimes the game designer will also create the finished product by programming the actual game structure.

Game designers need solid problem-solving skills and an excellent work ethic. Game designers usually work within a team of designers, reporting to a lead game designer. Most game design companies work directly for a game publisher, although some game designers work freelance.

There is one prerequisite for a career in game design: an obsessive love for video and computer games! If you're the type of person who plays Nintendo Wii until the early hours of the morning, and hums video game tunes in your sleep, game design could be your career. But you can't waltz into a game career without some education and practical skills. The best background for a game designers is to have skills in graphic design, computer science or computer engineering.

You can be a games designer
Look for courses specifically on animation, game design and programming. If you can't find a college or university that offers a specialised game design degree, build up related skills by taking courses in graphic design, industrial design, computer programming, fine art or engineering. The possibilities are endless! Keep abreast of current video and computer game news and trends by subscribing to magazines or apply for a job as a games tester. Then try to get an entry-level position at a game design company.
