Framer
Picture framing is the art of framing paintings, drawings, photographs, certificates, prints, and other objects for presentation. Many picture framers come from fine art backgrounds or have experience in graphic design. Although there are no prerequisites for this art career, it's useful to have experience in fields like art hanging, canvas stretching and carpentry. Picture framing can sometimes lead to a specialist role in art conservation or conservation framing.

Most picture framers work in small businesses, providing framing services for the general public. When a customer comes in with a picture, the picture framer should explain the different frame and matt board options, and offer advice on colour, layout, and design. The picture framer should discuss cost with the customer, and then provide a quote. Sometimes the picture framer needs to determine if the picture or object needs conservation framing to protect it from sunlight, moisture, and mold. In other instances a customer may want an existing framed work repaired, and the picture framer needs to reassemble an existing work.
Besides art and design skills, a picture framer needs to have good math skills to calculate and measure framing materials properly. A picture framer works with materials such as frames, matting, spacers, glass, and wiring. It's also essential for a picture framer to be schooled in carpentry (for assembling frames) and glass glazing. Sometimes a picture framer is requested to hang the framed works in a customer's home or office, so an understanding of art hanging is an advantage. Since many picture framers run their own businesses, communication and business management skills are also quite useful!
The framing path to follow:
Although most colleges and universities don't offer picture framing degrees, many community colleges and art schools offer basic picture framing courses. The best way, however, to gain experience in this field is to get an apprenticeship or an assistant job at a framing shop. Taking a course in carpentry, graphic design, fine art, or art hanging will also help your application.
