The initial designs are commonly conceptual coloured illustrations; these are then worked further deciding on fabrics to use, then they are developed into sewing patterns that are later made into the actual garments. The Fashion Designer oversees this entire process right up until the fashion parade when designs are presented to potential buyers.

To work as a fashion designer drawing & illustration skills are desirable, for a more hands on approach knowledge of sewing, various fabrics and materials is also very beneficial.
