Artist Model

An artist model is someone who poses for the artwork of fine artists, portrait painters, body-painters, photographers, sculptors, and illustrators. Artist models are also used for the work of furniture designers and video game designers. Many artist models also work as fashion models, photographic models, or dancers.

The shape of the human body is one of the most useful tools in learning to create art. Artist models are used in art schools to teach art students about the anatomy of the body. Art students need to learn about drawing and painting different body shapes, so artist models can be any age, sex, race, size or shape. When working at an art school, artist models may pose for figure drawing, figure painting, and sculpture classes in front of 20 students or more. Artist models are also employed by individual artists to aid in their drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures, or illustrations.

 Modelling for an art class
The majority of artist modelling is nude, however clothed or costumed modelling is also common. Props such as furniture, sheets, masks, and jewellery can be used. Flexibility to depict the rhythm of movement and the ability to hold a pose for long period of time are good skills for an artist model to master. A life drawing class generally runs for 2 hours. An experienced model will not move, wiggle, squirm, or get tired as he/she poses. Other artists may only need the artist model to stay in the pose long enough to take a photograph, paint the body or take a cast.

You can be an artist model:
If you're interested in modelling for art schools or for professional artists, some form experience is usually preferred. You may want to volunteer as an artist model at a small art school first or if you have friends who are fine artists, practice modelling for them. It's important to remember that most artist models pose for the joy of helping create art - artist modelling jobs are often low-paid, or initially unpaid. However, with experience and contacts in the art world, you can make artist modelling a career. If you're already a fashion model, photographic model, or dancer, artist modelling is a great way to subsidize your income with regular work.

Artist model and life drawing tools & equipment:
A good life drawing class will provide for the model items such as; fan heater, lighting, cushions, chair/couch and a private changing area the artist model may like to bring a simple prop such as a scarf, belt, chocker, hair ribbon or bracelet as these can often assist students in their drawing. Before posing and during breaks an artist model wears a light gown, sheet or sarong.
