The Adelaide Central School of Art specializes in training and educating practicing visual fine artists. Established in 1982, the art school takes advantage of the on-campus art gallery and art studio to add to the learning experience and the art school only hires practicing artists to serve as teachers.
The educational approach of the Adelaide Central School of Art is based on the "atelier" model, sharing the same characteristics with JS Prout's Hobart School, Julian Ashton's Sydney Art School, and the Victorian National Gallery School. These schools have produced some of Australia's most widely respected and successful artists such as Tom Roberts, Sir Arthur Streeton, and Brett Whitely. Like these other schools, Adelaide Central School of Art gives students the opportunity for one-on-one instruction and attention. Also, sufficient time is given to drawing and studio practice, which will help students in all other artistic practices.
Adelaide Central School of Art offers a variety of award and non-award programs. The award programs include Certificates, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, and Degree Awards. Adelaide Central also offers a dual award program with Flinders University of South Australia. The School of Art now offers Graduate Diploma in Visual Art and Master of Visual Art.
The non-award art programs include short program art courses, master art classes and art workshops, winter and summer art workshops, and more. The art subjects taught in non-award programs range from painting to drawing, to ceramics to silver jewellery making.
